Now they’ll take on the host team for the right to play for a national title – in theory.
With COVID-19 cancellations looming large all over the country, the Clippers wasted no time making sure they’d be in the conversation as one of the best teams in Canada should things be shut down early in Garneau, Que., blasting to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-14) win over the Prince Edward Island-based Holland Hurricanes in their opener on Thursday.
As might be expected with such a commanding win, the stats for the contest were fairly low – Rebecca Garner led all players with eight kills on 17 attempts, while Mia Harder and Mikayla Benterud had five each. Garner tacked on six service aces and five digs, while Harder added four aces. Setter Ashley Erickson led the way with 18 assists.
Holland College would opt to withdraw from the tournament and return home after the match due to COVID-19 concerns, forfeiting their final contest.
The Clippers are set to face the host Elans de Garneau in the national semifinal on Friday night, and with a victory there would advance to face the winner of the London, Ont. Fanshawe Falcons and Vancouver Island University Mariners for gold on Saturday.
As of 5 p.m. on Friday, all games were still proceeding as scheduled.
