Portland Winterhawks standout goes in the fifth round, 147th overall to New York
Moose Jaw Minor Hockey product Reece Newkirk is a member of the New York Islanders.

The Portland Winterhawks standout was selected in the fifth round, 147th overall during the second day of the 2019 National Hockey League Draft on Saturday in Vancouver.

Newkirk, 18, is coming off a solid season with the Winterhawks where he scored 23 goals and 59 points in 68 games.

He’s the first Moose Jaw product drafted since Rhett Gardner was chosen in the fourth round, 116th overall by the Dallas Stars in 2016.
