The Regina Thunder have advanced to the Prairie Football Conference championship game thanks to a 64-9 victory over the Calgary Colts on Sunday at Leibel Field.

The Thunder, who are celebrating their 25th anniversary season, stopped the Colts on a third-down gamble on Calgary’s opening drive and never looked back. Regina marched the ball into the endzone following the turnover and built a 21-0 lead after the first quarter.

The Colts would cut into the lead on their first possession of the second quarter when Quarterback Isaiah Klein connected with Quinn Fedoroff on a 28-yard touchdown pass.

However, after a Colts player was ejected for throwing a punch, the Thunder would score 19 unanswered points to take a 40-7 lead into halftime. And Regina never would look back.

The running game powered the Thunder’s offense. Ryland Leichert carried the ball 24 times for 191 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. Not to be outdone, receiver Benjamin Walz caught seven Ethan Hugg passes for 82 yards and three touchdowns.

The Thunder will head to Saskatoon on Sunday, October 20, to take on the reigning PFC and Canadian Bowl Champion Hilltops in next week’s final. A rematch of last year’s final that was won by the Hilltops.

Kick-off next Sunday is a 1 o’clock at Saskatoon Minor Football Field.
