Now they’ll be playing for gold in their first Hockey Canada event later this evening.
Yager and Unger are both in action with Team Canada Red at the tournament in Ottawa, which features three Under-17 national squads alongside the Canadian National Women’s team.
Yager has had a solid showing from the first puck drop: he currently sits fourth in tournament scoring after putting up four goals and two assists through Canada Red’s four games thus far.
That includes a goal in Canada’s 7-2 loss to Canada Black to open the tournament on Friday, followed by another marker in a 7-0 win over the National Women’s team on Saturday and a goal and assist in Red’s 4-2 win over White on Sunday.
Yager also put up a goal and an assist in Red’s 6-2 victory over White in the semifinal on Tuesday.
Unger -- who joined the Warriors for the season from Edge Academy shortly after the Capital City Challenge rosters were announced -- has seen action in three games and has been stellar in each.
That includes a 22-save shutout against the National Women’s team to go along with a 26-save showing in the round robin win over White and 31-stop performance in the semifinal.
Unger leads the tournament in both goals against average (1.33) and save percentage (.952).
Warriors assistant coach Gord Burnett is also in action at the tournament, working as an assistant for Team Red with head coach Kris Mallette of the Kelowna Rockets.
Winnipeg’s Zach Benson leads the Challenge in scoring for Team Black with six goals and 11 points, with almost all of those -- three goals, four assists -- coming in their 10-5 win over the National Women’s team.
Puck drop for the gold medal game between Canada Red and Canada Black goes at 6 p.m., and you can stream all the action on www.hockeycanada.ca.
