Janice Elizabeth Bonar passed away peacefully with her husband by her side on October 10, 2021 at Providence Place. She was 73 years old. Born in Leader, Saskatchewan on October 19, 1947 to Mike and Christina Dirk, Janice was the second eldest of 6 children.
Janice was raised in Fox Valley, Saskatchewan, leaving school early to help her mother around the home with cooking and taking care of the family. She spent many years watching over her younger brothers and sister, always helping where she was needed.
In April of 1966, Janice graduated from Medicine Hat Beauty School. Afterwards, she ran a private salon in her family's home before moving to Regina. She then moved to Saskatoon where she worked for LaRue's as a traveling salesperson, selling hair supplies and cosmetics throughout Saskatchewan. After that, she worked at a barber shop in the Hillsdale Mall alongside her best friend, Vivian Bonar. It was through her friend that she would meet Milt Bonar, who she would marry just a few years later in 1979.
She would also finish her GED in 1979 and began teaching at the Moose Jaw Artistique Beauty College in 1980. In 1981, they moved to Ogema, Saskatchewan where Milt worked for the Royal Bank, and they started their family. Here, Janice opened a private salon that she ran out of the upstairs of their home. Her first son, Jonathon, was born in 1981, followed by the second son, Michael, in 1983. A few months later, the new family moved to Hanley, Saskatchewan, where Janice looked after the children for the first few years before once again starting a salon in their home, as well as selling Avon products around town. In 1990, the family would move to Imperial Saskatchewan where Janice would work for Sandi McCallum at One on One Hair Studio, and in 1995, they would once again move to Moose Jaw Saskatchewan where she worked at Chatters Hair Salon until 2005.
Janice loved to spend time with her family, no matter where they were. She enjoyed going camping, reading or fishing during the days and spending nights by the fire, playing cards and telling stories. In the winters, Janice and her husband spent time volunteering at the hockey rinks and playing competitive curling with friends. Throughout the years, in all of the communities she had been a part of, Janice made sure to join the local parish community, teaching sacramental classes and ushering at mass.
She was always sure to keep herself active and took part in plenty of activities and interests. In the summers, she could be found in her garden where she grew flowers, fruits, and vegetables of all sorts, always having something fresh to eat with every home cooked meal. She also loved taking care of her animals, having many dogs and a cat over the years. She loved putting together puzzles, reading, and watching curling and the Roughriders. She especially loved playing the board game Aggravation with her family, where she made sure to keep score.
Janice is predeceased by her parents, Mike and Christina; brothers, Jerry and Harvey; father and mother-in-law, John and Jean Bonar; sister-in-law, Marilyn; and many other beloved family members.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Milt; her son Jonathon (Leslie), and their children Ryley and Jake; her son Michael (Dara), and their child Kaia; her brothers Murray and Michael (Dale); her sister Carol (Bruce) Sheldon; her brother-in-law Greg (Sally); her sisters-in-law Gail Schuler-Dirk, Sandy Dirk, and Vivian (Terry) Satens; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
