LUCIAK
Edward Michael Luciak, aged 89 years of Moose Jaw, SK, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 7th, 2025.
Edward was born on October 8th, 1935, in Hodgeville, SK, to parents William and Annie (née Cisek) Luciak. He grew up alongside his seven siblings and began his education at a country school before attending Agriculture School in Moose Jaw.
Edward’s strong work ethic and love for people defined his life. He began his career at Joe L’Heureux Grocery in Vanguard, SK, followed by work in the meat department at Eaton’s Groceteria in Moose Jaw. In 1957, he purchased Brothers Confectionery at 319 Caribou St W. Just a few years later, in 1960, his brother Bill (William) took over that store, and Edward went on to purchase Maple Leaf Grocery from a local merchant. He worked there until his retirement in 2018.
At Maple Leaf Grocery, Edward became a fixture of the community, known for his skill in meat cutting and his signature sausage-making. He wasn’t just a grocer—he was a friend to everyone who walked through the door. His love for his work was matched only by the joy he found in the friendships he built over the years. Even in his final days, when asked what he wanted to do, his last audible word was simply, “work.”
In 1961, Edward married Marlene Kowitch, and together they raised two children, Michael and Alison. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Edward would do anything for his family. He found great happiness in spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Edward had a deep appreciation for nature. He loved planting and caring for trees and took pride in creating habitats that supported wildlife conservation. His Ukrainian heritage, culture, and faith were also central to his life. He was a proud, long-time member of the Prosvita Ukrainian Society and remained active in his church and community throughout his life.
Above all, Edward loved people. His warm, welcoming nature meant that no one remained a stranger for long.
He was predeceased by his parents, William and Annie Luciak; sisters, Rose (Kon) Stoppler and Mary (Bill) Senicar; brothers: Joe Luciak, John (Helen) Luciak, Bill (Eleanor) Luciak, and Don Luciak; and brother-in-law, Willard Richards.
Edward is survived by his loving wife, Marlene Luciak; son, Michael (Michelle, her children Lynnea, Pierre, and Alex) Luciak; daughter, Alison (Rick) Philipenko; grandchildren: Lexin (Hannah) Luciak, Seena Luciak, Brianne (Evan) Philipenko Barber, Nadia Philipenko (Carson), Tessia Philipenko (Reid), and Katriana Philipenko; great-grandchildren: Leah and Max Luciak, and baby Clara Barber; sister, Helen Richards; sisters-in-law, Irene Luciak and Doreen Luciak; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Brent Janzen for many years of exceptional care, and to Dr. Yendamuri for his recent compassion and dedication. Deep gratitude is also extended to the incredible nursing teams at the Dr. F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital and the Pioneer Lodge Palliative Care Unit.
A Celebration of Edward’s Life will be held at 2pm, on Saturday, May 24th, 2025 on the farm – South of Moose Jaw on 9th Avenue South, turn west on Highway 363, and signage will be posted for further directions.
