BEVERLY JUNE MCCARTNEY (née: Zimmerman)

It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Beverly McCartney on Sunday, November 1st, 2020 at the young age of 66 years. Bev faced many medical issues over the years and this year, in particular, threw her many curve balls. She battled breast cancer, the possibility of lung cancer and losing her own Mom Verna just four short months prior on July 1st, a recent surgery on September 4th also brought some unfortunate complications. Bev suffered several strokes after the surgery that left her without the use of her left side. She fought and battled for two long months in the hospital, but when faced with a loss of her independence and an intolerable amount of pain, Bev made the incredibly brave decision to choose a medically assisted death. She never wanted a life where she was not able to live independently. So, on November 1st Bev came home from the hospital. She was in her own home surrounded by family and a few close friends and passed away peacefully knowing how much she was loved.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Greg; and her parents, Verna and Hank Zimmerman.  Bev is survived by her daughter, Christa McCartney; son, Scott McCartney (Heather); granddaughters, Anna and Emma; brother, Randy (Katherine) Zimmerman; nephew, David (Joni) Zimmerman; niece, Carly (Alex) Gheseger; cousin, Janice (Terry) Rowlinson; cousin, Josie Rowlinson; brother-in-law, Wayne (Sue) McCartney; nieces, Karen and Heather McCartney; brother-in-law, Garth McCartney; and many wonderful friends. Bev will leave so many loving memories for her family and all who knew her.

Bev was born March 13th, 1954 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. She was raised in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan with many great memories of growing up with her parents Hank and Verna and her brother Randy. Some of Bev’s favourite memories include family vacations to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Lake Windermere, BC and Expo ’67 in Montreal to name a few. She also spent summers at Buffalo Pound Lake waterskiing with friends and winters snow skiing at the White Track ski hill in Moose Jaw. Bev was also involved in intramural sports in high school including cheerleading, floor hockey and even played on the girl’s football team at one point. She was also the very first female to ski Delirium Dive in Banff, Alberta, a run that very few can ski… or would choose to.

Bev went to Greg’s grade 12 Grad with him at Central Collegiate High School where they were both students, but it wasn’t until a few years later when they met up again in Banff that the sparks flew, and their adventures together began. After being ski bums for a while, Bev married Greg in 1974. They started out in Assiniboia, SK and Christa and Scott came shortly after. Different opportunities took them to Regina, Texas, back to Moose Jaw and eventually out to White Rock, BC where they laid down their roots. Greg and Bev were the loves of each other’s lives. No two people were as perfect together as they were. Bev described Greg as compassionate, loving, caring, funny and brilliant… a gift and a blessing in her life. As Bev has said, “it was never a dull moment and I would not trade one minute of our journey together”. One thing that brought her peace at the end was knowing she would be together with Greg again.

Bev took great pride in her family. She was the glue that held them all together. Bev and Greg had a very open and loving relationship with their children, and they were very close-knit. Bev always let her kids know they could come to her about anything. She had a smile and a laugh that would light up a room. She was always there, always willing to help and would make anyone, family or friend, feel welcome in her home.

Bev was especially proud of her granddaughters, Anna and Emma. She loved the fact that she lived only a couple of blocks away and could pick them up from school occasionally or have sleepovers with them. Spoiling her granddaughters was always her prerogative and she loved to do it.

Although Bev’s time here was cut way too short, she asked that we embrace our memories and know that she will be with us in those memories that we carry in our hearts and minds.

As per Bev’s wishes, no Funeral Service will be held at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes or donations may be made to your local hospice society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
