The Montreal Alouettes have chosen Davis Alexander over Cody Fajardo as the team's starting quarterback for 2025 and beyond, according to 3DownNation reporter Justin Dunk.
General manager Danny Maciocia and head coach Jason Maas made a decision to sign Alexander to a three-year contract extension through the 2027 season. The 26-year-old was a pending free agent, which is why the Als wanted to lock him down.
In 2024, Alexander completed 69.5 percent of his passes for 1,347 yards, six touchdowns, three interceptions with a 104.9 QB rating. He also had 24 carries for 166 yards, 6.6 per carry, and three touchdowns on the ground.
The six-foot, 195-pound pivot produced a 4-0 win-loss record, which includes one victory against Saskatchewan in Week 11 at Mosaic Stadium, and led a second half comeback versus the Roughriders in Montreal in Week 8, although he was not credited with that win because he did not start the game.
“Davis is the future of this franchise,” Maciocia said in a statement. “This season, he was called upon to play in crucial games with us, and he responded very well under pressure. He has learned from Cody Fajardo for two years and is ready to take the next step. We’re now entrusting him with the leadership of the team, and we have full confidence in him.”
After leaving Saskatchewan following the 2022 season, Fajardo led Montreal to a 110th Grey Cup victory while earning game MVP honours in 2023. He connected with Canadian receiver Tyson Philpot on a 19-yard, game-winning touchdown to earn a CFL championship ring.
Last season, the 32-year-old he completed 73.6 percent of his passes for 3,105 yards, 16 touchdowns, seven interceptions while carrying the football 51 times for 277 yards and three touchdowns. He posted a 7-5-1 win-loss-tie record in 13 starts as the Alouettes clinched first place in the East Division but lost in the East Final.
Fajardo spent three seasons with the Riders, throwing for 10,632 yards, 48 touchdowns and 32 interceptions. He also rushed 266 times for 1,436 yards and 22 scores while producing a 27-17 regular season win-loss record.
