MOOSE JAW — The Moose Jaw Community Players theatre troupe is preparing for its most ambitious production yet as it brings the popular musical “The Sound of Music” to the Mae Wilson Theatre this summer.
The upcoming production also coincides with the musical’s 60th anniversary, adding to the excitement surrounding the show set to run for approximately two-and-a-half hours each night from June 19 to 21.
“It’s definitely the most ambitious production that we’ve taken on to date,” said Ivy Sheward, communications director for Moose Jaw Community Players.
“Musicals are a big undertaking, and we already have upwards of 80 people involved — whether it’s on stage, sewing costumes, taking part in the orchestra, finding period pieces, or creating sets.”
First performed on Broadway in 1964, “The Sound of Music” has become one of the most cherished musicals of all time, known for its timeless songs and heartwarming story. Now, the Moose Jaw Community Players are taking on the challenge of bringing the classic to life with a large cast, live orchestra, and an extensive backstage crew.
The scale of this production is unprecedented for the Community Players, with more than 80 people involved in various capacities. From actors and musicians to set designers and costume creators, the project has drawn significant participation from the community.
A key feature of the production is the involvement of young performers, with approximately 15 students participating both on and off the stage.
“One of my favourite parts about ‘The Sound of Music’ is that we have so many ridiculously talented kids in Moose Jaw,” Sheward said. “I love that we’re bridging the gap between a community theatre — which is oftentimes for someone maybe past high school or university — to welcome students into our production and make it a true community event.”
The production remains largely faithful to the original, though audiences can expect a few subtle changes.
“It’s such a classic story,” Sheward explained. “I think that when people come to see it, they’ll find that there’s a little bit of a change from the traditional Julie Andrews version. There are a few songs and characters that are new. It’s still the story that we love, but there are a few little surprises in there.”
The production is supported by Athabasca Financial, the title sponsor for the show. The Community Players are still accepting additional sponsorships, allowing businesses to be featured in its promotional materials, social media channels, and show programs.

With the premiere just months away, excitement is growing among the cast and crew.
“You don’t really see a show like this come together until maybe a week or two before it actually hits the stage,” Sheward said. “It’s so (rewarding) to see the magic that’s made in those little moments that kind of come together to create something so cool.”
