MOOSE JAW — Week 2 of CAA Saskatchewan’s Worst Roads Campaign 2025 has launched, and so far, only one of Moose Jaw’s roads has made the list.
As of April 15, The Friendly City’s Fifth Avenue Northwest was on the infamous lineup for the first time, sitting in seventh place because of its potholes.
Sitting in first place is Highway 5 near Buchanan in east-central Saskatchewan because of poor road maintenance, followed by Highway 4 near Dorintosh in second because of potholes and Highway 339 near Avonlea in third because of potholes.
This week, Angel Blair, CAA’s Worst Roads roving reporter, took a journey along Highway 22 where road users from the communities of Markinch and Cupar have identified problems like giant potholes as safety concerns.
“Year after year, potholes and crumbling pavement remain as the top issues in our campaign. Several factors can cause deterioration of our roads — everything from weather conditions, age of the roads, heavy traffic, and lack of maintenance,” Blair said.
“In cold climates like Saskatchewan, the freeze-thaw cycle plays a significant role in creating potholes — a problem that occurs when temperatures regularly go above and below the freezing point,” she continued.
When rain or snow seeps through cracks and openings in the pavement, it freezes and expands, causing the pavement to heave upward, Blair added. Then, as temperatures rise, the ground underneath the pavement returns to its normal level, leaving a cavity or hole that breaks apart with continued use of vehicles driving over the fractured pavement.
Road users who want to draw attention to roads that they feel are unsafe should vote for CAA’s Worst Roads Campaign by visiting caaworstroads.com, selecting a municipal or provincial road and a specific segment or section, and voting for it.
Nominate and vote for roads that have potholes, poor road maintenance, poor road signs or road markings, unpaved roads, traffic congestion, no or poor cycling infrastructure, or poor transit infrastructure, the organization says.
The CAA 2025 Top 10 Worst Roads will be announced on April 30. A grand prize of a $1,000 Shell Gift Card, courtesy of CAA Saskatchewan, will be awarded to one winner selected through a random draw from all eligible votes.
The winner's name will be drawn on April 30.
CAA Worst Roads is an online engagement campaign aimed at drawing attention to the province’s worst, most unsafe roads. The top 10 worst roads for 2025 will be shared with key stakeholders, government, and business leaders in hopes of sparking conversation and action.
