Sask Polytech hosts open house for prospective students

Prospective Saskatchewan Polytechic students were given a thorough tour and opportunity to ask questions about programs during the recent open house at the Moose Jaw campus

The halls of the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Moose Jaw campus were filled with the curious questions of prospective students during the institution’s annual open house on Mar. 11.

Polytech staff and students were set up in the Macoun Lounge, armed with displays and their own knowledge about various programs offered here in Moose Jaw in order to answer questions from interested Polytech hopefuls.

“The open house is a kind of informal way for students to get to know what Sask Polytech can offer them,” said Derek Tannis, director of Student Engagement and Learning Services at Sask Polytech.

The program booths featured representatives from programs including Environmental Engineering Technology, Carpentry, Architectural Technologies, the School of Natural Resources and Built Environment, and more.

Polytech representatives answered questions from potential students about topics such as what their respective programs are about, what kind of work terms are available, the academic requirements to be accepted into the program and, perhaps most importantly, the practical application of their program in the workforce.

“I think that's what the open house is all about, is making that dream come closer to reality [and seeing that] ‘this is a good place for me to study,’” said Tannis. “It's an opportunity to have conversations with faculty to discuss how they’re going to get from where they are . . . and know that Sask Polytech can really be part of their future career plans.”

Students were also able to speak with Polytech staff about available student awards, flexible learning programs, and how to navigate the application process.

Polytech staff and students were also giving tours of the campus, which included campus amenities as well as specific departments that prospective students were interested in seeing.

The open house greeted prospective students from as far away as Maple Creek, Calgary and the Manitoba border, said Tannis, who was pleased with the turnout.
